Well as a bisexual I'm a bit offended here. I mean what does it really matter to you if someone wants to have an alternative kind of marriage? How on Earth would you be able to understand what it is like to be attracted to both genders equally anyway?

I have talked to "triaders" on twitter and they say that some plan to go to the very states that have passed gay marriage and push to approve triad and poly marriages.

....and on the subject of triads usually being one man and two women - sometimes the women are bisexual. Other times the women are desparate and willing to settle for 1/2 a husband. Aside from that, however, NO man would put up with being in a triad with another man unless they're bisexual. If they were both heterosexual, one of them would probably end up killing the other one.

Ok, and next will come, "I want to marry my dog!" "I want to marry my computer (not a bad idea)!" "I want to marry an underaged child!", etc.

You have to have boundaries. Otherwise, there is no end to what a whacked-out human being can come up with to facilitate the destruction of a civilized society.

Triad marriages... when I heard about Roseanne and Tom Arnold forming on years ago I laughed. I hope they don't want a certificate for that. It's none of my business if a three people wanna live together like my father in-law, his legal wife and then "the other". People will do what they want.

But as someone already said, after a bit it sounds more like an orgy than a relationship. I can understand swingers who meet a couple for sex and then go back to their mynogomous REAL lives.

But pretty soon we'll have 4 gay men and looking for the right to adopt a cute set of twin 6 yr old boys. Gays DO have the right to adopt in America. Creepy possibilities.

And why are triad marriages almost ALWAYS one man and two women? hmmm??

We wish we lived in a perfect world where our subjective views and feelings about any and everything were correct because they feel so correct. We wish that our "personal" behaviors and choices didn't hurt anyone but ourselves. But we live in a sophisticated and complex society, and what affects one, affects all, more than any of us would like to admit.

The issue of alternative marriage/families is a Pandora's box, and there are many practical issues to consider outside of moral considerations, such as insurance coverage for an employee's partner or partners. If laws change to protect and encourage not just gay marriage but all manner of the new and different so that we are "fair" to everyone, what would employers who normally provide health insurance for employees be required to provide for alternative families? One partner and any biological or adopted children cared for by a gay couple is one thing, from a practical standpoint. But insurance coverage for a polygamist with two or three wives and multiple children? A man with a husband and a wife? One of these "tribes" some websites refer to? Where does it end?

For those honest enough to understand human nature, it's predictable that it will end in the ultimate tragedy: the lowering of standards the law has traditionally provided to protect children. These include the age of consent, requirements for parental approval for marriage under age 18, severe penalties for incest, etc. The relaxing of some of these critical standards is already in place in some European countries. In Holland, prostitution is legal at age 11. In Sweden, incest has been treated casually for years. Don't think it can't happen here.

Maven, don't be ashamed for having an informed opinion, you are absolutely right.

Vicar, we should not mind our own biz when the rights of kids are concerned. The purpose of marriage is to bind parents to their biological kids, not to facilitate deviants declaring their "love" for each other. Anything that is unnatural & not ordained by God (homosexuality & plurality) should not be sanctioned by the state.

You know, it's ALMOST hard to believe that what gay marriage proponents said would NEVER happen is already upon us! I'm just about shocked!

I too wish govt could keep out of this. Unfortunately the times we are in won't permit this issue not to be addressed. Others will disagree, but I believe this is what happens when a society tries to answer all of it's questions outside of biblical boundaries. I KNOW that many will be horrified that I said that, but it is just my viewpoint, not with malice, just observation on my part.

Great post, Ed!

That is exactly what I want! I want Government to mind their own business. Government has no right to get involved in ANY marriage!

I am an attorney and I have been arguing about this since before the Massachusetts supreme court decided gay marriage was legal in "the commonwealth". It is absolutely true that arguments in courts and before legislatures for gay marriage can be used for triad, polyamorous or polygamous marriage or whatever. In fact, if you look at most state laws, these arguments can be used to some extent against many of the "old fashioned" exclusions. I remember some very straight-laced lawyer debating this on TV with Barney Frank several years ago. Frank just blew off the "leads-to-polygamy" argument. Well, it's here liberals, what say you now ?
